THE 2024 WOMEN IN MOTION PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZE TO BE AWARDED TO ISHIUCHI MIYAKO
On Tuesday, July 2, 2024, Kering and Les Rencontres d’Arles will present the Women In Motion Prize to Japanese photographer Ishiuchi Miyako at the Théâtre Antique in Arles. On this special evening, she will showcase her work and share her journey and perspective on the role of women in photography and society with the audience.
The representation of women is subtly yet powerfully present in Ishiuchi Miyako’s work. She criticizes the objectification of women by capturing the female body as the subject of her art. Her photographs celebrate imperfections, scars, and age, in contrast to the beauty standards portrayed in mainstream media. By presenting intimate scenes, Ishiuchi Miyako invites viewers to question their own perception of femininity, the feminine, and the role of women.
Through projects such as « ひろしま/hiroshima » and « Mother’s, » she explores Japan’s wartime past and its impact on individuals, particularly women who are often overlooked in historical narratives. At the core of her artistic practice, Ishiuchi Miyako embodies the principles of women’s empowerment by advocating for their autonomy and better representation. Through her photographs, she continuously sparks a dialogue on gender, culture, and memory in today’s society.
In 2023, as part of its partnership with the Kyotographie International Photography Festival, Kering supported the exhibition « Views through my window, » a dialogue between Ishiuchi Miyako and Yuhki Touyama.

Martin and Pauline Vermare, with contributions from Carrie Cushman, Kellie Midori McCormick, and Mariko Takeuchi, this pioneering book on the subject will be published by Textuel for the French version and Aperture for the English version, titled « I’m So Happy You Are Here, Japanese Women Photographers from the 1950s to Now. »
